50 productive tasks you can do during downtime in your music therapy business
Your Online Presence & Tech Pieces
- Update your website (take an audit and make sure all pages have correct information + updated messaging)
- Update your printed marketing materials (brochures, flyers, rack cards, handouts, etc.)
- Update your business cards (do you know that you can design your own on Canva.com?)
- Update cover photos/headers on all of your social media accounts
- Make sure all of your contact info is up-to-date on your social media accounts
- Start a blog for your website
- Put together an editorial calendar for your blog & batch write blog posts
- Put together your online marketing calendar for the next quarter
- Plan out, batch, and schedule your social media for the next month
- Make sure a backup of your website is made at least weekly
- Make sure a backup of your Google Drive is made frequently
- Make sure to backup your computers, laptops, and devices (make sure they are properly updated, as well)
Planning
- Put together details for additional services and offerings for the summer and beyond
- Research grants and scholarships
- Look at upcoming health fairs, opportunities, conferences, and presentations so that you can market your business with your community
Innovative Income

- Create an e-book or downloadable resource for your audience (and sell it!)
- Create songs and leadsheets for your audience (and sell them!)
Systems & Materials
- Balance your accounts and financials
- Check on your referral systems — make sure they are working for your needs
- Work on your company/business systems and workflows
- Instruments and materials inventory (and disinfecting/cleaning)
- Replace guitar strings, tune instruments (Autoharp, anyone?), change batteries
- Update your song inventory
- Create new playlists in Spotify
- Learn a new song that you’ve been meaning to learn
- Prepare visual aids (and laminate!)
- Make a list of office supplies and other materials that you need (bonus step: create a wish list so that others could gift you!)
Learn & Share Your Expertise
- Listen to a new podcast (my favorite entertainment one is The Office Ladies; my favorite biz one is Online Marketing Made Easy by Amy Porterfield)
- Write a session proposal for the 2020 AMTA Conference
- Watch a TedTalk (watch Music, Bonding & Flowing — Improvising Our Way There by music therapist Ed Roth)
- Take an online continuing education course (or two!)
- Update your CBMT credits online
- Download the latest Code of Ethics from AMTA
- Read the latest Journal of Music Therapy and Music Therapy Perspectives
- Write new songs (and share them!)
- Share live or pre-recorded music over social media (Facebook Live, Instagram Live, YouTube) so that your audience can listen and interact with you at home
- Learn a new skill (embroidery, writing, macrame, etc.)
Personal & Self Care
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking time for self care IMPROVES your business.
- Unplug and read a book (my fave fiction is anything by Jane Austen; my favorite non-fiction is Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller)
- Complete your census online – https://my2020census.gov
- Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ it up
- Stop scrolling through social media and turn off your phone
- Skype/Facetime with friends and family who are far away
- Do some yoga, stretch, jumping jacks
- Take some mindful breaths or meditate
- Take a walk outside
- Journal
- Get crafty
- Sing the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording at the top of your lungs (oh, that’s just me?)
- Watch cat, puppy, hedgehog, giraffe, hippo, penguin, eagle live cams and videos (my fave is April the Giraffe)
